David Aquila ("Quil") Lawrence reports for the PRI/BBC radio news program "The World," dividing his time between Washington, Afghanistan, and Iraq. He joined the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) World Service staff in 2000 as a Latin America correspondent, following freelance reporting in Cuba, Morocco and Sudan. Prior to his IRP Fellowship in 2000, he was based in Colombia, where he reported as a freelance journalist from 1996 to 1999 for National Public Radio, the BBC, the Los Angeles Times and the Christian Science Monitor, among others. Quil grew up in Maine, and studied history at Brandeis University, concentrating on Latin America and the Middle East.
